A few more arguments for switching to Drivetribe

Remember the days when really good Oppo articles would get posted to the FP? Well, that still happens on Drivetribe! Since yesterday, two of my posts have been shared to the homepage. So that’s fun. Drivetribe also has a chat section. I’m not sure how it compares to Discord, but it seems similar to me and it’s already being used quite a bit. Also, YOU DON’T HAVE TO CREDIT IMAGES ANYMORE!!

People here have already listed all the reasons why Drivetribe is the most similar option to Kinja, but I haven’t seen these things mentioned yet , which I think are actually improvements over Kinja. Just thought I’d let you know.

Kinja'd!!!

Yeah, I hope people check it out. It’s a much better version of Kinja than Kinja ever was— at least in terms of WYSIWYG and editing tools.

At least on Chrome my experience here with Kinja was complete randomness in things like Text Formatting-- and how many times it would load-and-commit a single uploaded JPG.

They also have direct messaging, which people on Kinja have been asking for since day one.

Yeah, the one and only concern I have with Drivetribe is that it might feel less personal. I’ve heard that was one thing people didn’t like about LaLD on Drivetribe, but otherwise the community over there is thriving. And I think we’ll be able to rebuild our community over there just fine.

Perhaps we can make a name for oppo by flooding Drivetrive with content, i know oppo in its current state wasnt as friendly to long thoughtful articles. Im sure there are some of us who still want to write those pieces and tribe will give them a way for recognition, along with maintaining a stream of members to oppo if we move

Yep, from my very limited experience it looks to me that Drive Tribe will work. I would wish you could directly paste screengrabs to postings. Also, it appears to be a mystery to find the tribes from the front page. But at least the culture looks to be favorable to hosting us and I think we can drive a lot of traffic in there way.

Yeah, it is actually like a better-implemented version of Kinja.

Funny, it’s like “the first day of school in a new District” over there. Kids meeting, yelling in the halls, getting acquainted, checking out the new lunchroom and menu...

I think it will work...  And, you guys doing the great Aviation Posts should check out a dedicated Aviation tribe.  Management over there seems to love the authors--  meanwhile G/O seems to consider the more-than-commentors-less-the-staff people an annoyance.  Which is weird given how much better the comments are than the actual Jalop posts a lot of days.

So how does it work? We don’t move as a collective group of Oppositelock, but, are just individual posters there and no longer part of the borgcollective of opponauts ?

Yup....I do REALLY wish there was a way to default sort by ‘New’ rather than ‘Hot’.....

Also, a downside: the ads... :(

And the fact that you see like...one post per screen when browsing the list compared to like 6 posts on Oppo Kinja.

ALSO....Baldi Frogs were FIAT 500 based! YAY! :D

I think we’d be better served with our own site with our own bulletin board.  But that’s just one oppos opinion.

That’s correct about LaLD, but there was a lot going on in the background. DriveTribe themselves were excited about the migration so they were busy pushing our content around the site. On top of that, the Hobbies Vertical, the section of the DriveTribe site where hobby posts get promoted, had a sponsor, so DT staff was pushing our content there. We were jumping into the entire website and community, rather than just our little corner of the Internet like we had on Kinja. That’s why people felt it was less personal and not as tight-knit, because our content was getting shared and bounced around all over racking up views but not a lot of comments. Things have settled down since then and that sense of community is back

The way it works is there are a bunch of different “Tribes”, centered around different things. Think of them like the sub-blogs/group blogs of Kinja. There is already an Oppositelock Tribe, which is where we’ve all been going, and y ou can find it here: https://drivetribe.com/t/opposite-lock-WsyTisBFQiuJU7cDJZttOw Other than that, it’s functionally very similar to Kinja!

In addition to that, there are also tribes devoted to specific car brands, car types, Lego cars, diecast cars, really almost anything car-related you can think of.

I think the same may already be happening with the Oppo tribe, but at least this means it should settle down eventually, so we should be fine.

The major benefit for LaLD was teaching new members and growing our community. We’ve grown so much since we’ve had that opportunity to get our stuff promoted and shared, unlike with Kinja when Jalopnik stopped sharing posts from user blogs

I see. If James May can understand it, then I should be able to. Are wqe keeping screen names or are people changeing, to more legit names? I ask because Medium, as a Oppo place, seems to promote more ‘legit’ writing.

Whichever you prefer, really. They want your real name, but you can totally just put your screen name in there.

I just joined drivetribe with the name “G Witha”.  Let’s keep talking about the Lego miata....

Ah yes, the Miata. Slight change of plans with that. I would need to modify my computer to handle the rendering program, and I’ve calculated that it would actually be cheaper to just order the parts I don’t have and build the Miata IRL. Plus, then I’d actually have the Lego Miata! So that’s my new plan. But I’m currently swamped with schoolwork, so it may have to wait. As fun as the Miata project is, it can’t take priority over college.

Hmm. I haven’t made instructions for it or a parts list as that is a lot of work, but I can give you the links to the 3d models so you can look at it from any angle and try to reverse-engineer it. I might also make proper instructions for it if it fails to gain enough supporters on Lego Ideas. Here’re the links for it with headlights up, headlights down, and everything open:

https://www.mecabricks.com/en/models/Jk2Ex1Yla9A

https://www.mecabricks.com/en/models/GejeN1MDvKX

And let me know if you’re confused about how a part is put together, I may be able to provide a view with some parts removed so you can see the inside better.
